China Three Gorges University (CTGU) is a prominent institution located in Yichang, Hubei Province, near the renowned Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze River. Today, China Three Gorges University serves as a key educational and research institution, known for its contributions to China’s energy sector and environmental conservation efforts. It continues to emphasize interdisciplinary studies and innovation, supporting both regional and national development goals.

The history of the Medical College of China Three Gorges University can be traced back to 1923.

University covers an area of 3,000 acres, with construction area of 1.4 million square meters. 

Airport & Bullet Train:

Yichang Airport & China fastest G train (Bullet Train) connect Yichang City with Wuhan, Beijing, Shanghai and with rest of the country.

 In recent years, the University has invited 3 Nobel prize winners to lecture in CTGU, and welcomed 70 international delegations of nearly 1000 person-times per year. Furthermore, CTGU applies extensive exchanges and communications with other countries and regions, and keeps close relationships with diplomatic envoys of the USA, France, Nepal, Maldives, ROK, India, and Pakistan.

The university’s history is rooted in a merger of two predecessor institutions:

1. University of Hydraulic and Electric Engineering (Yichang)
2. Hubei Sanxia University

The merger took place in June 2000, under the guidance of the Chinese Ministry of Education and the Hubei Provincial Government. The establishment of CTGU was part of a broader initiative to consolidate and strengthen educational resources in China, especially in the fields of hydroelectric power and environmental engineering, which align with the needs of the Three Gorges region.

• Predecessor Institutions:
  The University of Hydraulic and Electric Engineering (founded in the 1970s) specialized in water conservancy, electric power, and engineering disciplines. Hubei Sanxia University offered a broader curriculum, including liberal arts, sciences, and management.

• After the Merger:
  CTGU rapidly developed into a comprehensive university, offering programs in engineering, science, medicine, economics, management, law, and humanities. With a focus on practical and research-oriented education, the university supports the Three Gorges project and contributes to regional development.
