The university’s history is rooted in a merger of two predecessor institutions:
The merger took place in June 2000, under the guidance of the Chinese Ministry of Education and the Hubei Provincial Government. The establishment of CTGU was part of a broader initiative to consolidate and strengthen educational resources in China, especially in the fields of hydroelectric power and environmental engineering, which align with the needs of the Three Gorges region.
Predecessor Institutions:
The University of Hydraulic and Electric Engineering (founded in the 1970s) specialized in water conservancy, electric power, and engineering disciplines. Hubei Sanxia University offered a broader curriculum, including liberal arts, sciences, and management.
After the Merger:
CTGU rapidly developed into a comprehensive university, offering programs in engineering, science, medicine, economics, management, law, and humanities. With a focus on practical and research-oriented education, the university supports the Three Gorges project and contributes to regional development.
